Impact Of Information And Communication Technology On Adult Education Delivery

Abstract

This study explored the impact of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on adult education delivery in Lagos State. ICTs have become integral to all facets of life, significantly influencing workplaces, businesses, education, and entertainment. They are recognized as key drivers of change in work conditions, information handling and exchange, teaching methods, learning approaches, scientific research, and access to information. The study sought to address several questions: (1) How useful are ICTs in adult education delivery? (2) How efficient and effective are ICT resources in enhancing adult education? (3) What challenges hinder the application of ICT in adult education? (4) To what extent is ICT utilized in adult education delivery in Lagos State? Data were collected through a survey design, targeting professionals and paraprofessionals from the University of Lagos Adult Education department via a questionnaire. A cluster sampling technique was employed to select participants, and a twenty-item questionnaire was administered to a sample of one hundred respondents. The data were analyzed using frequency distribution and simple percentages. Findings indicated that barriers to effective ICT use in adult education include inadequate and unreliable infrastructure, insufficient training facilities, a shortage of qualified personnel, nascent automation, and a lack of technical expertise. Despite these challenges, the study concludes that ICT has significantly advanced the delivery of adult education programs. The implications of these findings for adult education delivery are discussed, and recommendations are provided.
