Assessment Of Outdoor Learning Activities And Its Impact On The Academic Achievement Of Basic Science Students
This study was carried out to examine the impact outdoor learning activities on the academic achievement of basic science students in secondary schools in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. The study was carried out to find out the extent Basic science teachers do use outdoor learning activities in teaching and learning of Basic science, ascertain the importance of outdoor learning activities in teaching and learning of Basic science, and identify the problems hindering the use of outdoor learning activities in teaching and learning of Basic science. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of teachers and students of some selected junior secondary schools in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 200 respondents and 150 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables and mean scores. While the hypotheses were tested using Chi-square statistical tool. The result of the findings reveals the extent Basic science teachers do use outdoor learning activities in teaching and learning of Basic science is low. The study also revealed that the problems hindering the use of outdoor learning activities in teaching and learning of Basic science includes: Funding limitation, time constraints, transportation problem, difficulty in obtaining, parental permission, lack of encouragement by the school authority. Therefore, it is recommended that extensive outdoor learning activities should be organized by schools so as to expose the students to events outside the classroom. To mention but a few.
