Teachers Attitude And Competence In Practical Skills As Correlates Of Students’ Performance In Biology

Abstract

This study was carried out to examine teachers attitude and competence in practical skills as correlates of students’ performance in biology in Lagos state.  Specifically, the study aimed to  determine whether there is a significant relationship between teachers attitude towards practicals and students academic performance in biology, determine whether practical skills of teachers influences the effecting teaching and learning of biology in secondary schools, find out the level of teachers effectiveness in conducting biology practicals in secondary schools and determine whether the level of teachers competence in practical skills influences students academic performance in biology. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. A total of 160 responses were validated from the survey. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that  there is  a significant relationship between teachers attitude towards practicals and students academic performance in biology. The study also revealed that practical skills of teachers influences the effecting teaching and learning of biology in secondary schools. The study further revealed that the level of teachers effectiveness in conducting biology practicals in secondary schools is high. Lastly, the study revealed that the level of teachers competence in practical skills influences students academic in biology is high. The study thereby recommend that teachers should adopt effective verbal communication attitudes while teaching the students in the classroom so as to bring about improved students’ performance. Also,  classroom management attitudes of teachers should be such that will instill discipline among the students. Lastly, teachers should develop sound pedagogical attitudes in the three domains of learning so as to enhance the students’ performance.

Aims and Objectives

The broad objective of the study is to examine teachers attitude and competence in practical skills as correlates of students’ performance in biology in Lagos state. The specific objectives is as follows:

  1. Determine whether there is a significant relationship between teachers attitude towards practicals and students academic performance in biology.
  2. Determine whether practical skills of teachers influences the effecting teaching and learning of biology in secondary schools.
  3. Find out the level of teachers effectiveness in conducting biology practicals in secondary schools.
  4. Determine whether the level of teachers competence in practical skills influences students academic performance in biology.
Research Questions

The following questions have been prepared for the study

  1. Is there a significant relationship between teachers attitude towards practicals and students academic performance in biology?
  2. Does practical skills of teachers influence the effecting teaching and learning of biology in secondary schools?
  3. What is the level of teachers effectiveness in conducting biology practicals in secondary schools?
  4. Does the level of teachers competence in practical skills influence students academic performance in biology?
Hypothesis Of The Study

Ho: Teachers attitude and competence in practical skills does not influence students academic performance in biology in secondary school.

Ha: Teachers attitude and competence in practical skills influences students academic performance in biology in secondary school.

Chapter Five

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

5.1 Introduction

This chapter summarizes the findings on teachers attitude and competence in practical skills as correlates of students’ performance in biology in Lagos state. The chapter consists of summary of the study, conclusions, and recommendations.

5.1 Summary

In this study, our focus was to examine teachers attitude and competence in practical skills, and its impact on the academic performance of students in biology using senior secondary schools in Badagry, Lagos state as a case study. The study specifically was aimed to determine whether there is a significant relationship between teachers attitude towards practicals and students academic performance in biology, determine whether practical skills of teachers influences the effecting teaching and learning of biology in secondary schools, find out the level of teachers effectiveness in conducting biology practicals in secondary schools and  determine whether the level of teachers competence in practical skills influences students academic performance in biology. A total of 160 responses were validated from the enrolled participants where all respondent were drawn from biology teachers and students in some selected senior secondary schools in Badagry, Lagos state.

5.2       CONCLUSION

Based on the finding of this study, the following conclusions were made:

  1. There is a significant relationship between teachers attitude towards practicals and students academic performance in biology.
  2. Practical skills of teachers influences the effecting teaching and learning of biology in secondary schools.
  3. The level of teachers effectiveness in conducting biology practicals in secondary schools is high.
  4. The level of teachers competence in practical skills influences students academic performance in biology is high.

5.3       RECOMMENDATION

Based on the responses obtained, the researcher proffers the following recommendations:

  • Teachers should adopt effective verbal communication attitudes while teaching the students in the classroom so as to bring about improved students’ performance.
  • Classroom management attitudes of teachers should be such that will instill discipline among the students.
  • Teachers should develop sound pedagogical attitudes in the three domains of learning so as to enhance the students’ performance.
  • Teachers should show good mastery of the subject content in their areas of specialization so as to be able to impart the necessary knowledge to their students which will in turn bring about improved students’ performance.
