Smart Movable Road Divider With Ambulance Priority System Using IoT

Overview

ABSTRACT

Basically a road divider is used as a barrier to separate the road for the vehicles which are moving in two different directions. As we have seen around us these road dividers are static i.e., they cannot be shifted/moved from one place to another. We have also witnessed a very high traffic only on one side of the road during peak/rush hours. When there is a high traffic it causes accidents and also many emergency vehicles get stuck in this traffic, which may result in loss of life. Therefore an efficient system is proposed here where smart movable road divider is implemented which will work based on the road density. The ambulance priority system is also included here which provides a free path for the ambulance using RFID tags and RFID reader. Vehicle signal violation can also be detected in this proposed project.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0                                                INTRODUCTION

1.1                                  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Traffic has become a major problem in the developing cities or underdeveloped cities. If the vehicle is stuck in traffic this will not only affect the time taken to travel but also the fuel is wasted. Whenever a person gets stuck in traffic a huge amount of carbon dioxide, scientifically expressed as CO2, will be inhaled. This affects a person’s health too. Due to this everyday traffic jam illegal activities like robbery, chain snatching are also increasing. The population across the globe is increasing day by day but there are no proper developments taking place to manage with the increasing population. This is because the resources which are available to us are very less. Therefore a move has to be made such that the available resources should only be utilized in a better way possible.

With all the above concerns a need has been developed for reducing the traffic flow. The government is also trying its best to reduce the traffic. Various rules are also made the government such as parking the vehicles on busy roads, waiting on busy roads are all prohibited but also the traffic overcrowding problem is not decreasing. Looking at all these problems that have been faced by the people daily, this paper has tried to provide a better solution for the day to day increasing traffic. Hence in this work a smart movable road divider is implemented, which can change its original position based on the density of the vehicles on both side of the divider. As the emergency vehicles are also facing a lot of problem due to traffic congestion, a priority is given to these vehicles also. The signal violation is considered as one of the offence which has to be intimated immediately. Hence if any signal violation is caused by the normal vehicle, an alert message will be sent to the nearby traffic police station using a Wi-Fi module.

1.2                                         PROBLEM STATEMENT

The problem is with the static road is wide, that is, the number of lanes of traffic on either side of the path is increased. Since the resources are limited and as the population grows, the number of cars per family, and there is a significant increase in the number of cars on the road. This means a more efficient use of existing resources, such as the number of available lanes.

At this time, there was a consistent and significant increase in the level of congestion in the road, causing traffic jams, especially during rush hour.

Passengers who have to meet the extreme traffic during peak hours, on a day to day basis, so there will be a delay to arrive at their destination. In the morning, during rush hour, the traffic on one side of the road when compared to the other side of the road, and the situation is the same in the evening.

1.3     Aim and Objectives of The Study

The main aim of this work is to build a smart movable road divider and ambulance clearance path using IOT that can be used to control traffic congestion problem in Third Mainland Bridge. The objectives of this work are:

  1. To reduce traffic congestion problem by providing an effective solution to it.
  2. To replace the old system of road divider where the traffic personnel have to mount on the road to monitor, control traffic and divide the road in other to allow traffic to flow.
  • To give priority to ambulance or emergency vehicles in the midst of road traffic congestion.

1.4     Scope of the study

The scope of this work is based on the density of the traffic using IR and ultrasonic Sensors. If the density of the traffic is high on one side, the divider is moved to the other side. Then the density of traffic is stored in cloud which is possible through IoT. A free path for Ambulance is provided using RFID Module by controlling the traffic signal.

1.5     Benefit of the study

  • Using RFID a cloud is made to detect the arrival of ambulance and then make a way specially for
  • These techniques help to decrease the traffic congestion and update information of traffic through
  • Decrease time
  • Green Benefits include improved air quality, improved fuel efficiency, and reduced atmospheric

1.6                               SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT

This study will serve as a means of exposing student involved to how to use IoT to control traffic light and how to interface an arduino module. To all readers of this book, this device will serve as a means of making them to understand the importance of IoT based traffic control system.

1.7                          APPLICATIONS OF THE PROJECT

  1. Street Lights of main roads of Town, City or town ship.
  2. Industrial Lighting
  • Plant Lighting
  1. Premises of large complexes
  2. Society / colony internal lightings

1.8                               PROBLEM OF THE PROJECT

  1. Fortnightly Time setting required
  2. Exposed to dust affect the performance
  • Battery required to be replaced.
  1. Dust, clouds & birds affect the performance – leads to mal functioning of product periodically sensor required to be cleaned.

1.9                                                        METHODOLOGY

To achieve the aim and objectives of this work, the following are the steps involved:

  1. Study of the previous work on the project so as to improve it efficiency.
  2. Draw a block diagram.
  • Test for continuity of components and devices,
  1. programming of arduino microcontroller
  2. Design and calculation for the work was carried out.
  3. Studying of various component used in circuit.
  • Construct the whole
  • Finally, the whole device was cased and final test was carried out.
