Design And Construction Of A Keypad Control For Multiple Appliances
ABSTRACT
Keypad control for multiple appliances is a device designed to on/off multiple appliances using a keypad.
This circuit employs DTMF technique to switch on/off up to ten appliances. The controller uses telephone-type keypad with 12 press-to-on switches. These switches are arranged in four rows (R1 through R4) and three columns (C1 through C3) using seven lines that are terminated at corresponding inputs of DTMF encoder UM91214B (IC1). IC1 generates 12 distinct dual-tone signals corresponding to the switch pressed. This signal is routed to the receiver using a wired link. (It can also be used for remote control using IR or FM.)
The wired link unit can be operated off a 9V PP battery or using a suitable AC mains adaptor.

1.1 INTRODUCTION
In present times there are many types of Home Automation Systems which are available in the market. Most of these are simple Home Appliances Controlling Systems like DTMF controlled Home Appliances, GSM based Home Appliances Controlling, RF based Home Appliances Controlling. Here we are going to discuss about TV or DVD Remote Control LED Home / Office Appliances Control (Home Automation System) using Arduino Board.
In this project, TSOP (IR Receiver) is connected with Arduino. Arduino receives encoded signal coming from IR Remote and then decodes by using IRremote.h library, which is easily available on internet (Find this library by typing on Google IR remote library for Arduino). After decoding the signal, compare decoded signal with defined value, if the match occurs then perform related function or switching on/off related relay by using digital input/output. Here AC load is used for demonstration. Three Home/Office Appliances are used for demonstration. In which one zero watt bulb indicated by light 1 and second is 100 watt bulb indicated by light 2 and third and last is TV/LCD indicated by TV. LCD is also added in this system for displaying the current status of Appliances like TV ON, TV OFF, light 1 ON, light 1 OFF, light 2 ON, light 2 OFF, ALL ON, ALL OFF etc.
1.2 THE OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT
The objective of this work is to design a relay based 4X4 Keypad controlled home appliances system with AVR ATmega16 microcontroller Part-I. Here, we will use the 4X4 keypad as the input device to control the appliances i.e 2 bulbs and 2 fans.
1.3 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT
- With this device multiple appliances can be controlled in homes, even in offices.
- It is cheap when considering the number of control it can handled.
- It is microcontroller based, therefore number of load it carries can be adjusted
1.4 SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
Here, we will use 2 keys of the Keypad to control one appliance. One key will be used to turn on and the other key will be used to turn off the appliance. So, for four appliances, we will use 8 keys of the keypad. Apart from these 8 keys, we will use 2 more keys to turn on and off all appliances at a time. Now, press different keys of the 4X4 keypad and control your appliances.
1.5 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS
In every home, office or industries, keypad appliances plays a vital role, that is, It provides a means of switching appliances of different power rating using relay; This project has been improved on the existing types of electromechanical device that has being in use over the years.
In the course of designing this project, different kinds of problem was notice such as:
- Difficulty in troubleshooting with circuit without the circuit diagram
- Difficulty in connecting the circuit, without the circuit diagram.
- Difficult in wiring because of the strong wiring the project required..
1.6 LIMITATION OF THE PROJECT
This work covers only using 4*4 keypad and using it to control upto eight different home appliances, and it is microcontroller based.
1.7 APPLICATION OF THE PROJECT
Applications of this project are not in homes but it can also be applies in other places such as:
- Small and Medium Scale Industries
1.7 PROJECT WORK ORGANISATION
The various stages involved in the development of this project have been properly put into five chapters to enhance comprehensive and concise reading. In this project thesis, the project is organized sequentially as follows:
Chapter one of this work is on the introduction to this study. In this chapter, the background, significance, objective limitation and problem of this work was discussed.
Chapter two is on literature review of a variable dc motor drive. In this chapter, all the literature pertaining to this work was reviewed.
Chapter three is on design methodology. In this chapter all the method involved during the design and construction were discussed.
Chapter four is on testing analysis. All testing that result accurate functionality was analyzed.
Chapter five is on conclusion, recommendation and references.
The Title Page should be the first section of your project “Design And Construction Of A Keypad Control For Multiple Appliances”, providing essential details like the project title, your name, your supervisor’s name, the institution, and the submission date. After that, the Abstract offers a brief summary of your project, touching on its purpose, methods, results, and conclusions in 150-300 words. The Acknowledgments section is where you can thank those who supported your research, such as your supervisor, peers, or organizations that provided resources.
Next, the Table of Contents organizes the Design And Construction Of A Keypad Control For Multiple Appliances by listing its chapters and sections, along with page numbers for easy reference. The List of Figures and List of Tables help guide readers to specific visual elements like graphs, charts, or tables included in the document.
